Audiences and Institutions essay

How does your own experience of media consumption illustrate a wider pattern and trend of audience behaviour?

My own experience of media consumption shows a pattern and trend as all the media outlets I used are all extremely popular and are used my the masses. Netflix and other streaming services are a way in which I consume media and they are also the popular choice of many others that consume media. By knowing what I use to consume media I can also find out what others use as it is the most popular option. Other way in which I can find out what the audience is using to consume media would be "word of mouth" This tells me what the masses are watching and what they are using to watch, In today's society many people start up a conversation based around what they are watching at the current moment and see if who they are talking to knows what they are watching, or if both of them are watching the same media and therefore a conversation starts.

In my survey that I conducted I saw that the most popular streaming service for media consumption was "Netflix" This tells me that many people are using Netflix instead of regular linear TV for media consumption. The cinemas are still in use and the most popular in my area being "Events" Cinemas are still operating well however many people in society use the cinema as a "treat" or a social gathering with their friends and family, rather than a way to watch films. Many people would rather watch films and TV at home on Netflix where everything is accessible to them. Another thing that can keep people at home to watch Netflix would be the price, just one movie ticket at the cinema is the same price as a whole month subscription to Netflix, and that isn't counting the ridiculous pricing of snacks, popcorn, and drinks at the cinema.

I have found that web 2.0 has drastically impacted my own media consumption and this is evident in a greater, global audience trend of consumption too. Web 2.0 has allowed the spread of streaming services and audience trends to grow online. The use of the internet and social influences have shaped how the common person views media and the habits that the common person may have when it comes to media consumption. Many social influencers can also have an affect on what the common person may watch. If an actor or celebrity that someone really likes tells their followers to watch a show then that may influence their followers decision as to whether or not they should watch the show.

  1. Hi Addison

    Overall Score: 23/50

    Terminology: 3/10
    Analysis/ Argument: 11/20
    Explanation/ Examples: 9/20

Ok, let's look at the brief...

    2. Use your notes from our last few class zoom sessions as points for each paragraph. Write a brainstorm of what you will include in this essay (roughly 5 - 6 paragraphs with information from our last few sessions).

    3. This essay in particular is asking you to include details about your own media consumption. You can dedicate a paragraph to explaining how you consume media then make sure you COMPARE and CONTRAST to wider audience patterns.

    4. Use some of your findings from your audience surveys in your essay to back up your points.

    5. Use your case studies! This is really important. In ANY Audiences and Institutions essay, you will need to use information from your case study research somehow. This will be a great test to see that you have some information to contrast and talk about in relation to you big budget, Hollywood Blockbuster compared to a NZ film. What was the target audience? How did the way they released their film reflect audience behaviours? (for example, did they release

    Mark allocations
10 marks: TERMINOLOGY (use the words I gave you and demonstrate that you understand what they mean, eg. fragmentation).
20 marks: Analysis/ Argument - how clearly do you understand the question and how strong is your main point? How well is it backed up by evidence? If you were in a court, arguinng your point of view, how much of a strong or convincing argument do you put forward?
20 marks: Examples - this is the details!! This is where you include not just terminology but definitions, not just random statements like 'people are not buying DVD's anymore', you will look up facts, stats and quotes to back up your statement. All that research you did on those links for homework will come in handy here as detailed examples for your main points.

    - there was very little terminology included in this that I could give marks for. You mention web 2.0 but don't really show you know what that means and don't talk about fragmentation, conglomerates, horizontal/ vertical integration, cross-media convergence, synergy, technological convergence... all the notes from our last 3 zoom sessions..

    - You start off by saying that your current media consumption reflects the wider audience patterns and then sort of give me 2 points (that Netflix is a popular streaming service and that web 2.0 has influenced or changed the way we consume media). 2 points is not enough to get the marks you need to pass. Where is the evidence? Where are the case studies? Where are the stats and research you spent hours doing? Where are the demographics research about how audiences of different ages consume media?

Every essay HAS to include case studies (movies and Disney as your institution).

I want you to write on another blog post

    1. what is your argument/ opening statement?
    2. What is your main point (if you can sum it up in 1 sentence) for each paragraph (you should have at LEAST 4 or 5 paragrahs)
    3. What case study and research EXAMPLES (statistics// facts/ figures/ quotes etc) can you put in for each paragraph to back-up each beginning statement?
    4. What terminology can you put into each paragraph to show you understand film concepts?

This will be the 'bones' of your essay and THEN you write it up.

Please re-do this. Please read the brief again and make sure you have a clear picture of what you're needing to write. If you are unclear, send me your plan before you start writing.

Looking forward to seeing an amended version of this tomorrow.
